My Bible Study Girlfriends and I are embarking on a New Testament book, having just finished the book of Nehemiah. Oh my, I learned alot of history from that book! Anyway, as I began to study James, I looked at who he was, his audience, etc. and thought I'd share some tid-bits about James you may or may not know.
*The author of James is somewhat uncertain. James is one of potentially five different men by the name of James. The one most likely to be considered the author is James, the half-brother of Jesus.
*James was highly esteemed by the early Christian community and considered first among three pillars of the church (Galatians 2:9). Acts 15 names him leader and chief spokesman of the apostilic council.
*Historians have it that James was thrown from the roof of the temple by the priests when he proclaimed Jesus as the Son of God.
*James's goal was to encourage his readers who were not only scattered (Acts 11:19), but also largely poor and oppressed. (James 2:6, 5:1-6)
Know any more tidbits about James that you might want to share?
